What Plastic Wristbands Tell Us About Our Favorite Events

We’ll talk about those plastic bands you find at all events, whether it is your local fair or the largest music festival. These plastic wristbands cling on your arm like an honorary badge, and say “I attended, man!” You may not have thought of the significance of these small bands. Please keep in mind that I’ll be keeping it simple and not going into textbook detail.

The wristbands act as the Swiss Army knife of event planning. The wristbands don’t exist just to be flashy or as a way of displaying your status. Behind the scenes, these babies work hard. Imagine that you are at a music concert. There is a VIP area, which only VIPs have access to. How does the security team keep track of everyone? Bam! Special wristbands. You can have a secret wristband, which is cool and more comfortable than a handshake.

The fun comes in the customization. Imagine having a bracelet that changes colors with music, or flashes your name in LED lights. This sounds like something you’d see in a sci fi movie. This is totally feasible. The event planners have gotten creative and are turning the bands into an experience, rather than just a pass.

Durability is important because no one wants their wristband to fall apart during a dance in a mosh-pit or become mushy when it rains at a festival. The wristbands are designed to be tough like a super hero costume, so that they can withstand whatever Mother Nature (or you) may throw their way.

The kicker is that while we are all enjoying ourselves and flashing around our wristbands, the spies behind them are secretly collecting intel. In a way that’s more like “let’s have a great time again next year.” Some of them come with tracking chips to track foot traffic or spending habits so that organizers can improve their events.

Many of us keep these wristbands as little keepsakes, reminders of the good times we had or new friends that we made. The wristbands hold more than memories; they are plastic.

Some of you are asking me about that elephant in the corner: what about the planet? Yes, throwing thousands of plastic rings after the party isn’t eco-friendly. Do not lose heart yet. There is a push to greener alternatives – and biodegradable products are making their way onto the scene.

Let’s wrap this up (see how I used that phrase? Before we wrap up this little chat (see what I did there? It looks like the future is bright, with bands that can double up as wallets and eliminate purse theft fears. Biometrics could also be added to security for an extra layer of protection (losing your band shouldn’t even be a concern).

Give it an appreciation nod next time that you put the band on your wrist. You could even keep it for later – you never know. This could be the ticket you need to revisit some of your most memorable moments.

It’s a combination of common sense and tech-savvy knowledge.

But who knows. One day, we may tell of our exploits against cyber criminals using nothing more than clever passwords and our own wits. Don’t forget to stay safe on the internet!
